Tom O’Gorman hopes to repeat last year’s Pirelli World Challenge successes at Utah Motorsports Campus, winning both races in 2016, upon his return to the track August 11-13, 2017.
The Pirelli World Challenge Touring Cars last raced at Lime Rock Park in May; now, after a 10 week break, the Touring Car drivers – including TCA driver Tom O’Gorman – return to Utah Motorsports Campus (UMC) for Rounds 7 and 8 of the 2017 Championship Season. O’Gorman is set to drive his #94 2017 Honda Civic Si, which has seen extensive development in the summer break. Having swept the Utah Motorsports Campus weekend in 2016, winning both races of the double header weekend in Touring Car B, O’Gorman and team have high hopes for a strong showing.
An all-new car for this season, the 2017 Honda Civic Si development race car from Honda Performance Development continued its development process in the June & July months, racing multiple times in SCCA Majors competition, undergoing comprehensive testing at Honda’s Ohio-based research facility, and completing a successful test in its Pirelli World Challenge TCA trim.
“Our 2017 Honda Civic Si is the first car built from Honda’s body-in-white program, which allows racers to build a car from scratch before it goes on the assembly line, using a kit offered by Honda Performance Development” O’Gorman tells. “We’re working with HPD to simultaneously develop the car for PWC TCA competition, SCCA Touring-class competition, and others, and always tying our progress back to the street car, which went on sale in May earlier this year.”
During the 10-week break from the racing action, O’Gorman and the team stayed busy testing and showing the newest Civic Si race car.
“We were able to have a great test at NCM Motorsports Park in Bowling Green, KY, thanks to the folks there, and our partners at Carbotech Brakes and Eibach Springs – we’re beyond prepared for Utah. We also got to bring the car to Gridlife Festival at GingerMan Raceway in Michigan, displaying it for around 10,000 people and turning some demo laps. I’m also thrilled to have just picked up a 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback Sport thanks to Honda and HPD, which I’ll be taking to almost all of the events on my calendar for the rest of the year.”
O’Gorman comes into the UMC weekend on a string of strong performances, including a win at Canadian Tire Motorsports Park – the first for the 2017 Civic Si – and a podium finish at Lime Rock Park in back-to-back weekends. The recent strong performances have moved O’Gorman into 5th in the Driver’s Championship standings and are carrying Honda’s Manufacturer’s Championship points.
“With this being a development year, we expected some ups and downs as we worked with World Challenge getting the car dialed in with the rest of TCA. It’s definitely been encouraging to see our finishes getting more and more consistent, and at the front of the field. The season is only half over, so we can only aim to keep that consistency up and keep moving up the standings, but also hopefully get back on the top step of the podium for some race wins.”
